Bobsledding

Bobsledding Is in Their Blood

Portrait of a Family of Bobsledding Enthusiasts in Fiè

Paul Mitterstieler and his wife Helene have imbued their three daughters Evi, Irene, and Anita with a love of bobsledding. And because bobsledding is, after all, not without its dangers, the Mitterstieler family – which is at home in the village of Fiè – has mixed feelings about its passion for this high-speed sport. For most of their lives, the members of the Mitterstieler family have spent every cold winter weekend on and at the sidelines of the bobsled course. For the daughters of Paul and Helene, it was taken for granted that they would accompany their parents to the tracks and watch them race – until gradually, it was the other way around. For years, now, the parents chauffeur their daughters to the races – not because bobsledding is profitable, but because it's fun. "It all began in 1964 in Tiers," Paul Mitterstieler recalls. "We rode so-called "Bock" sleds down the Niger, and that's what ignited our love of the sport."
